For many of us in Guam, checking out a new restaurant is a favorite pastime. Here are three new restaurants – and one not-so-new favorite – to help you look forward to your next meal.
Singh’s Café Kabob & Curry
The menu at Singh’s Café Kabob & Curry reads like a travel itinerary through the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia, where everything is so aromatic and appealing, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Singh’s Cafe serves a lineup of savory international curries including Indian, Japanese, Thai, and Malaysian, all made from the freshest ingredients everyday by Chef Kotwal Singh. Good luck deciding between curry and shawarma. Singh’s slow-cooked succulent lamb shawarma is a popular menu item, with the option of having it in a bowl with rice or in a wrap. Chicken satay kabobs with peanut sauce, chicken tikka masala, curry fries, and vegetarian options such as pumpkin curry round out the flavorsome menu at Singh’s Café.
Open daily and located at the Micronesia Mall food court.
Tacos Sinaloa
Guam’s newest Mexican restaurant is just a few weeks old and located in the La Isla Plaza in Tumon between Livehouse and Lotus Surf Shop. You can get your carne asada and carnitas fix at Taco Sinaloa but for something special that you won’t find anywhere else in Guam, turn your taste buds to the tacos Birria. Birria is a mix of beef and pork stewed in a combination of chilies imported from Mexico. It’s a savory dish that is usually reserved for celebratory occasions in Mexico but luckily for Guam, it’s on the menu at Tacos Sinaloa. Try also the taco Al Pastor—tender pork marinated in Mexican chilies and pineapple, served on corn tortillas. Wash it all down with an icy glass of refreshing Jamaica water (hibiscus tea) or horchata, made fresh daily at Tacos Sinaloa. Did I mention the cook is actually from Sinaloa, Mexico?
Open for lunch 11am-2pm everyday except Sunday.
Rotten Apple
With a name like Rotten Apple, it’s got to be either really great or really rotten. We’re betting on the former. The dynamic duo of Eddie Chien and Ace Elisasis from Delmonico restaurant are behind the island’s first and only steampunk-themed restaurant that’s been generating a lot of buzz and is slated to open on November 7. Steampunk style is all about mixing old and new: fusing modern technology with Victorian-era aesthetic and design. Rotten Apple’s flavors and cuisine are as curious and exciting as the decor and Chef Eddie is rolling out a menu featuring steamed bao buns with a variety of fillings, slow-cooked temperature-controlled lamb shank and pork belly, and a nice selection of seafood and salads.
Open nightly for dinner (6-11pm) and located next to Roasted coffee shop in Tamuning (former Napu restaurant).
Oishi Japanese Curry House
Opened in February 2013, it didn’t take that long for Oishi Japanese Curry House to become a local favorite. Oishi recently rolled out a customizable curry menu that lets you create a personal curry masterpiece. In the mood for spinach and eggplant curry? No problem. Craving tofu and mixed vegetables? Done. You can also stick to fan favorites like chicken katsu or pork katsu curry, which are hand-breaded every morning. With unique curry options like creamy crab croquette, salmon fry and gyoza, the flavors live up to their namesake “oishii”, which is Japanese for yummy or delicious. The secret to all the deliciousness might be in the time and care Oishi Japanese Curry House puts in preparing their curry. The curry is made from scratch with fresh vegetables and cooked for ten hours. Then it’s chilled for another 24 hours to mellow the taste out. Oishii!
Open for lunch 11:30am-2pm and dinner 6-9pm everyday except Wednesday. Located at the Star Building in upper Tumon.
