Summer means more time to spend with family and more outdoor activities. As refreshing as a hike on a warm, sunny day sounds, keep in mind: prolonged sun exposure can lead to wrinkles, age spots, and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Be kind to yourself and love the skin you’re in. Follow these tips for sun safety without sacrificing style.

Use Sunscreen

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, at least every two hours. A moisturizing lotion with sunscreen will help keep skin hydrated, although drinking water throughout the day is the best way to keep cool inside and out.

Relax Under Shade

The sun shines strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so limit outdoor activities to the mornings or afternoons. When enjoying a barbecue at the beach, be sure to set up a canopy that will provide your family with much needed shade. If you must be on your feet, an umbrella with a trendy design will keep you cool while looking fresh.

Wear Protective Clothing

Although the thought of a long-sleeved shirt may seem uncomfortable, clothing is the best protection for your skin. The trick is to find fabrics that will keep you cool and keep you safe, such as a tightly-woven, long-sleeved linen shirt and a wide brimmed hat. Some clothes are even given an Ultraviolet Protection Factor, or UPF rating. In the water, spandex rash guards can protect your upper body, while a colorful sarong will help to protect your bottom half.

There are many ways to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. These tips will help you stay worry free and help keep your family safe.
